Who we are
Meet Catherine Withers: A New Chapter at the Prince’s Motto
Catherine Withers, widely known as "Bristol’s last farmer", is bringing her lifelong passion for sustainable agriculture and community spirit to the Prince’s Motto in Barrow Gurney. After decades of championing nature-friendly farming at Yew Tree Farm—a recognized Site of Nature Conservation Interest—Catherine is transforming this historic village pub into a vibrant "foodie hub" that bridges the gap between farm and fork.
From Soil to Soul
At the heart of the Prince’s Motto is a commitment to the land. Catherine’s vision is to create more than just a place to eat; she is building a community asset where local production takes centre stage.
Growing for Our Guests: Drawing on her deep farming heritage, Catherine is dedicated to growing fresh produce specifically for the pub’s kitchen. Her goal is to ensure that the food on your plate is not just high-quality, but rooted in the local North Somerset soil.
A Toast to Local Producers: The Prince’s Motto is a proud showcase for local artisans. Our drink menu celebrates the region's best, featuring a curated selection of beers and wines from nearby producers. By supporting local breweries and vineyards, we ensure that every pint and glass poured contributes to the thriving local economy.
A Community Hub: After being vacant for 18 months, the Prince’s Motto has been "breathed back to life" with the blessing of the Barrow Gurney community. We are proud to offer a welcoming space that includes a small coffee shop for daytime visitors and a traditional pub atmosphere for evening gatherings.
